Parent Coaching

Who requires parent coaching?

At Brant Kids we believe that parents are the captain of the team and we can act as your coach. You are the one in the game and you know your child best, but sometimes it can be helpful to have some perspective, additional knowledge and encouragement to play your best in the game.  By better understanding your child, you gain a perspective that contributes to patience and creativity and gives you the tools required to feel empowered during challenging situations. We recommend that all parents who have a child participating in OT sessions should engage in some amount of parent coaching!

What may treatment include?

Parent coaching can be provided in person, virtually or on the phone. During this time parents will have the opportunity to:

  • Speak candidly about their concerns in a safe and non-judgemental environment

  • Problem solve with their child’s therapist on ways that parents can help support their goals

  • Be educated on parenting strategies and frameworks to build their own parenting toolbox

  • Learn more about their child’s sensory profile and developmental skills to understand what is underlying their challenging behaviours

  • Review strategies the child is learning in OT to help parents use the same language and tools at home

Why OT?

Occupational Therapists are trained to work with individuals across the whole lifespan. At Brant Kids we believe that we have two clients: the child and the parent(s)/guardian! OTs have additional learning and training in childhood development and sensory processing that shape the lens in which we provide parent coaching. When an OT works with both the parents and the child, they can ensure that all recommendations are tailored to meet your child’s unique needs.
