Neurodiverse Affirming Therapy
Who requires neurodivergence support?
It can be difficult for individuals who are autistic, ADHD, SPD or have other neurological differences to manage in their day to day tasks. At Brant Kids we offer neurodiverse affirming therapy to individuals who want to better understand how their brain and body works and how to get through their day without masking, burnout, or changing who they are.
What treatment may include?
Our sessions are holistic, strength-based, and client centered. Sessions will meet clients where they are at with a focus on building rapport and offering safe, trauma-informed care.
Therapy may look like:
Play based sessions where the therapist follows the child’s lead
Exploring sensory based strategies and tools to manage sensory overwhelm and dysregulation
Developing self advocacy and communication skills
Psychoeducation with the parent or child/teen to better understand their unique neurotype
Collaborating with and advocating for the child’s needs to other team members such as teachers, speech therapists, behaviour therapists
Why OT?
“A neurodiversity-affirming occupational therapy practice acknowledges that individuals differ in their abilities and how they interact with the world around them . Neurodiversity-affirming therapeutic supports are designed to respect autonomy and dignity and foster self-determination. A neurodiversity-affirming practice focuses on listening to the voices of neurodivergent individuals and co-creating goals with them and/or their families that are meaningful. Thus, a neurodiversity-affirming practice does not focus on reducing, altering, or replacing behaviours simply because they are considered “abnormal” – these behaviours are respected as central to the person’s way of being and valued” - Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists
